A Smile
Because it was a long day around here (not due to the Mice, just a long day today involving Walmart after Mike worked a 12 hour day yesterday), I needed a smile. I thought you might need one, too.
Thanks for visiting us, Matthias! We love you!

Packing for Jerusalem
No, not really. We have no travel plans. We do, however, have a couple of hilarious pastor's daughters. They decided to play the Fancy Nancy-inspired game "Packing for Paris" today. It's probably a familiar style game to most people. One person starts with "I'm packing for Paris, and I'm taking an X"; the next person has to say, "I'm packing for Paris, and I'm taking an X and a W". You play until someone messes up, I guess.
Well, during lunch today, the girls started playing the game, but instead of packing for Paris, Miss Mouse decided they were "packing for Jerusalem". I have a feeling it has something to do with the upcoming Palm Sunday that she loves. She's loved Palm Sunday since she was one year old.
Yes, back to the packing. They were "packing for Jerusalem" and taking (now we were in this order: Miss Mouse, Sunny, me) a donkey, a cat, a cow, a palm tree, a hippopotamus, a book, our dentist (not just any dentist, our dentist), and a chair. I think that is what we were taking. Sunny didn't repeat the list as we went, just added her own in each time and made silly suggestions for the other two of us. Miss Mouse repeated the list and probably could have kept going, but I lost track of who was bringing what after our dentist got packed along. It was fun and funny, and they told me tonight at bedtime that it is on the agenda again for tomorrow.
In other comments, the girls were in bed the other night, and I was trying to get Mighty Mouse settled when I heard a commotion coming from the girls' room. I heard Mike get up from the living room and head down the hall, but in the meantime, I heard what they were saying. Apparently Miss Mouse was giving the prayer for Sunny to repeat. Sunny was using her ridiculously loud voice, perhaps to make sure Jesus really heard her. It went like this: Dear Jesus, DEAR JESUS, Thank you, THANK YOU, for, FOR, dying, DYING, on the cross, ON THE CROSS, for, FOR, my, MY, sins, SINS. Amen. A-M-E-N!!! I caught Mike as he went down the hall and just said, "listen to them first", so he popped back into the nursery on the way back to the living room and said, "They were fine. I guess they were just having their own little liturgy. Guess who was leading?". They crack me up and warm my insides all at one marvelous time.
They were playing doctor the other day after Mighty Mouse had his six-month checkup. I heard Miss Mouse say to Sunny, "No, you can't be the doctor. The doctor is always the oldest". So, then Sunny looked at me and said, "I'm going to be the nurse. I'll be right back when I get into my nurse-y clothes." She changed into a tank top of her sister's which, for some reason, looks "nurse-y" to her. I guess whatever "nurse-y" is, that's what it looks like - a four year old in a six year old's tank top.
The girls have been playing with the bunny glasses Auntie Steph gave them last Easter. I dug them out the other day for Easter pictures. Mighty Mouse was given the princess bunny ears for the picture since he wouldn't let the glasses near his face without shoving them into his mouth (from there they would have gone down his throat and gagged him). I tried my best to get just the ears and not the pink-jeweled-princess-crown in the picture. *Sigh*. He's going to be one securely masculine dude someday. Anyway, one pair of glasses is pink, and one is white. Sunny asked me later that day, "Where are the ham bunny glasses, Mommy?". Um, the what?! Yep, the "ham bunny" glasses. I started to laugh, and she said, with some measure of pity for my obvious confusion, "Well, Mommy, they are pink, so they are the ham bunny glasses. Ham is pink, Mommy. The other ones are the marshmallow bunny glasses". Naturally. Of course. Mike, naturally and of course, said, "Ham bunny? Mmmm.....". Thankfully his comment was not heard by the smaller females in our household. I'm not too worried about any ham bunnies around here, though, since the last time he cooked something of that order (note: he cooked it; I was a great sport to try any game he'd cook in our first years, but I didn't really dare try my own hand at it...not beyond bear, antelope, pheasant, moose, and deer anyway), he gagged and grabbed my hand, which was on the way to my mouth with a forkful of food, and said, "You don't have to eat that!". So, I don't think there will be any ham bunnies around here other than those cute little glasses.
Those are just a few tastes of what winter has been like here this year. We're all ready for spring, ready to get our yard back in order after our fire, ready to go to the park, to introduce Mighty Mouse to the great outdoors. But we still have lots of projects we can do, so if Old Man Winter wants to hang on a bit more, we're just going to keep having a grand ole' time!

My Time as "Coolest Mommy Ever"
What, you may ask, is on Sunny's face???? That is, ta-da, old Cool Whip!
Yes, indeedy, the female Mice are in the bathtub with old, moldy Cool Whip because I found the world's best use for it!
Finger paint. Yep, this was one of my most hit-it-out-of-the-ballpark ideas ever. I've had a few of those interspersed with a dizzying number of fizzled-out-didn't-work-the-way-I-had-thought ideas. It really would make your head spin to count the number of times I've bombed ideas and projects and then stood on my creative head to figure out ways to salvage them. Usually we can, but that's due more to the grace of my children than to my own quick-thinking ability.
This idea, though?
This one was awesome.
We dyed the Cool Whip purple. See? A lesson in color mixing. We used (duh) red and blue food coloring, a few drops at first and then a few more to observe what would happen. It looks kind of gray in the pictures, but it was a beautiful lavendar color. We even added some yellow and green sprinkles, just for extra mess and fun. I have a really hard time with "mess" in the kitchen, but in the tub? Bring it!
This is Sunny's "I cannot hardly believe I'm getting to do this" look. They've been wanting to smash each other in the face with pie now for a few weeks. They saw Pat and Vanna do that on Wheel of Fortune one day, and ever since, they've had their hearts set on it. I told them we'd do it in the summer, but then I got to thinking that we could do it in the bathtub, turn it into a somewhat sciency lesson, and wash it all down the drain. It was so much fun, we might end up doing it again in the front yard and hosing off in the sprinkler, but I'm really glad we didn't wait that long!
Miss Mouse, was, as usual, more cautious. It could be because she's spent two more years with me than her sister has, so if Sunny had a "I can't believe I get to do this" look, then Miss Mouse had an even more incredulous feeling about the whole deal. I've loosened up considerably in the past few years. Hallelujah and Amen.
The above picture shows them once they really got going, smushing each other in the face.
Pure, squishy, happiness.
The only disappointment came in the absence of a tub-ring. Some of the neighbors' really bright chalk left a tub ring this summer when we washed off (the girls had it All.Over.Their.Bodies), so they thought they must not have gotten quite messy enough if they didn't create another tub ring. I, on the other hand, was just fine with that.
We will be repeating this project!

Finally!
Feel free to add your own caption idea to these pictures.
I happen to love them and think they are some of the best I've gotten of Sunny since this fall; she's been going through a silly photo phase. Personally, I'm thrilled about these pictures, also, because I made her this hat. Finished it, in fact, at 10:30 p.m. on September 15th. James was born at 4:30 a.m. on September 16th. As excited as I was about having finished the silly thing - that is proportionately how much she hated it. After all, silly Mommy, it is black, and black is a boy color! Never mind the pink edging and multicoloured buttons. She crack me up. But she FINALLY put the hat on yesterday! I knew I had to grab the camera because who knows when that hat might be deemed acceptable again!
Mike had some great captions for these "cool cucumber" photos. Any other suggestions? His were sort of political but very funny.

Beautiful
These are song lyrics. I think you can find the song here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGZkrn_vaqU
This song has played on the Christian station that Mighty and I listen to while he's going down for his naps. It brings tears to my eyes sometimes because it reminds me of little Sunny. Already she feels inferior to her big sister; already she looks at pictures of herself and says things like, "I don't like my smile; it doesn't look like my sister's." My heart cracks a bit when she says those things, and I redouble my efforts to be sure both of our girls know they are beautiful, talented, and created in the image of God. I remember being a big sister who wished so badly to be more like her little sister, a big sister who felt neither beautiful nor talented. Though that's the lie of the world, that's not what I want for these girls.
Miss Sunny, at four, you have a sense of humor to rival both your Grandpa Bob's and Grandpa Dick's, a voice that reminds me of your Auntie Laura's, a graceful running stride far beyond your years, dancing rhythm like I remember in your Great Grandpa Don's when he would twirl me around the dance floor, and so much sweetness from your grandmas and aunties and Daddy. May you always know that no matter what you do with those gifts, you are always loved for who you are.
